Holy crap. I always knew the 6R4 was supposed to be pretty nuts, but after seeing that I would be scared to death to drive it. Talk about barnyard engineering! I knew that Audi "kludged" together a lot of stuff but wow, it looks like the original builders of the 6R4 hacked it together in a weekend. Obviously it worked!
What the hell engine and gearbox/transaxle did they use?

It might look that way, however the Williams F1 team had their hand in the chassis development of the car, and that engine in the back of the 6R4 went on to be twin turbo`d and power the almighty Jaguar XJ220..........bloody impressive stuff.
