So I was driving along doing 2nd gear pull after 2nd gear pull fine-tuning the car. It was running great at 24 psi of boost. I did a bunch of runs at this level because my knock light kept lighting up and I couldn’t figure out why. Finally narrowed it down to the coils had to much dwell and were tripping it. Cool. So I gave the schrapenalknobben a good turn. Sweet, 27 psi no knock. Damn, I didn’t have the logger going so let’s do it again, but with more boost. Another 1/2 turn later there’s sparks shooting out of the hood vent. WHOA! FECK, the turbo just let go. Lucky for me the car was still running, but with a large exhaust leak so I limped it home 3 blocks and found this:

So why did this happen? Well, who knows. I did just get done trasfering everything over to a new bearing housing because I was having problems with oil seeping out the back. Well it's still dry even after all this. It looks like the turbine just snapped off. I made sure everything went back on exactly how it came apart, and it's not like I haven't done this before..... I think I just overspun it. 30 psi is alot of boost at this altitude and I really had to crank on the boost controller to get it up there.

So now I have to decide to get a GT30R or GT35R. I really wish I could have hit the dyno with this, but after logging boost curves I think I can get a good plot of what it would have done. I think this turbo would have landed right between the two, which is where I want to be.

I almsot feel like I should post a folllowup saying sorry for your loss? Heck, the way we treat our turbos I dont think thats fitting :)

Yea, it's funny, I'm pissed that it happened, but first thing I went up, grabbed the wife and said come look at this crazy shit! All the while laughing while taking pictures. She told me she's taking the new turbo money and committing me. I’ll pull it all apart tomorrow, but the turbo still spins free with little play and from what I can tell the compressor didn't even hit.

The new bearing housing was a last ditch effort to save this guy so I’ve been looking at new turbos for a while, kind of anticipating this. The GT30R is great at sea-level and no doubt I’d go with that if I lived down there. But the reality is it takes a pressure ratio of 3.9 to get there at my altitude. Toss in a 12,000 ft pass every now and then and I really start to fear for turbos up here. No wonder those K03’s fail all the time here. I’ve done a bunch of plots at work and I’ll post them tomorrow to see what you guys think. I really want to see how Hap’s car does on the dyno with the GT35R and I honestly might wait if he gets it on the road this weekend.

Then there’s the, how fast does this really need to be factor. It was frightening at 27 lbs of boost, and without the diff locked it was a real handful. I need to talk to my supplier and see what he thinks

Damn!!!! That means no dyno on Saturday huh? If you car was anything like Javad's which was out 28 psi when I rode in it. I'd agree, its pretty frightening, but more could only be more fun! :woowoo:

Ahhh well atleast ya kinda knew it was coming, just didnt get the invite for the date the party was taking place! lol

Sucks but good things are on the horizon man! LONG LIVE THE GINSTER! :-D

Gonna leave the hood as a battle scar? LOL

You mean your pusher?

So how do you like being able to "see" 27 psi?

Good lord :o So it looks like you need move up to a turbo from an airplane. :D

holy crap! man your lucky if it didn't do any damage to the engine! mmm....carnage...mmmm. :-D did it damage the exhaust mani at all?

Just saw the pics :o To bad, but could have been worse. By the way the 3071 survived with only bits and pieces of alluminum in the housing. I see that you have allready mentally skipped over the 3071 in favor of a GT30R or even a a35R! That beast must really breath. :-D

That's some serious power. And yes, being in Salt Lake, I understand the altitude problem.

LOL! Being able to tune up in that range is awesome. It's nice to just set the main scaler and crank up the boost. No more special tuning for the top row :woowoo:

Yes I'll be keeping the dents in the hood! My wife was more concerned about that than the turbo :wtf:

John, I looked at the 3071 just because of the insane pressure ratios it can hold, but the real fun in this motor is up top, and that's what I built it for.

I'm 99% sure I'm going with a GT35R. The compressor wheel and turbine are smaller in size than my current turbo. Add ball bearings into the equation and I can't see how I could be worse off response wise than I am right now.

Now I just need to decide what A/R housing to use. I'll probably stick with a .63 and use closed loop boost control to combat surge in higher gears.

Hey Jim, important car question for you.....

How did you get your wife to be concerned about your turbo???? Or your car for that matter???

I had my hood from my glacier blue 90 I would have given you when you come to Salt Lake, but our auto parts client came and got it. If you want a free hood I can see if I can get it back?

that dent is fixable, but he said he wants to keep it :D sick sick man :P

She really doesn't care, but she was the only one around so I forced her to come see. Thanks for the hood offer, but one of these days I'll be doing a B4 hood with S2 bumper conversion :-D

Well, I don't have either of those lying around...but there is a certifit warehouse here in Salt Lake that might have a $80 B4 hood. Maybe give them a call.

 reminds me of my fiance.... blank stare and only response to showing her anything I am breaking or fixing is "can I go now" or "how much does it cost?"

Jim,

It looks like you'd have "holed" your hood if not for that heatshield...

I have replacement for same turbo coming (hopefully today) from Swanson Motors ... mine trashed the center seals/bearings in a much less spectacular way...although it's the biggest cloud of smoke i ever made with a car - I'll be going from 50 trim to 57... felt like the 50 trim was "out of breath" (700' -2500 elevation here) above 5000RPM and boost drops so hope the 57 can keep up better... imagine you do need bigger turbo as your 20V has almost every heavy breathing bit available + the thin air...
