As much as I am a fan of quattro, I have to believe FWD really makes sense given your location and goals for the car. No need for unnecessary drivetrain losses when mpg's are a priority.

That said, there is a '95 90 sedan up here in SLC waiting for you...http://www.ksl.com/auto/listing/373056?ad_cid=1

Hey don't you have a mill to put together? ;) I liked your first paragraph though as far as goals and I really need to avoid scope creep!. That said, I still looked and let out a sigh of relief coupled with disappointment when I went to full specs and read drivetrain.......FWD  Too bad, it was even silver like any good German car ought to be. :)

Just looked up the curb weight on AudiWorld and it list the following for the 86 coupe gt

Curb Weight: 2507 lbs.
Drag coefficient: 0.39
Fuel Economy
City: 19 mpg (18 auto)
Highway: 25 mpg (23 auto)
Combined: n/a

2500 lbs sounds like a TDI version could be around 2550lbs. 200hp will motivate that car nicely, and I bet it gets 50mpg if you can keep it at 75 with a .56 6th gear. .39 C/D is the opposite of good!! Maybe we do some aero mods :)

That probably wasn't an A/C equipt car, but still 2500lbs is pretty good. It's hard to believe that Audi was the same manufacturer of the 5ktq that year with a drag coeficient of .31. That is where this project could do better, but if speeds are kept below 80mph it still should do pretty well out on the highway. I have been getting about 27mpg with the last four or five tanks commuting it to work so that sounds about right for a manual. I see you already are bumping my 170hp goals up a bit. ;) I'm sure you still think that compressor wheel looks tiny, huh?

I don't think the USA got AC delete in 86. I bet that figure is including A/C. The Audi brochure lists the 86 as having Air as standard equptment. It would be interesting what you could do with 3.70s with a .56 6th on gas.
