Should bring it closer so i can work some magic on it!

I don't know what I'm going to test/work on but I'm going to pull it in the garage tomorrow! It needs to run!!!
I've been busy putting a new 16v in my GTi.

Thanks guys!!! It is on its way to Black Mountain, NC to stay at Quattro South shop (ShadyUrS4 dad's shop) Now it is only 1.5hr from me and I can work on it on the weekend. Lane (ShadyUrS4) and his pops are going to help me diagnose this weak spark problem. Getting closer!!!!

Lol yeah man I wish i had 1/2 as much skill as him when it comes to customized cars. Maybe someday I will be like him. Can only hope xP

I had a day off classes and drove down to Black Mountain, NC (1.5hr drive) to work on the car. Lane (ShadyUrS4) came with and we worked on the car. Working outside in the cold rain was uh...fun.

Done:
-new starter motor
-different coil mount set up (less ghetto)
-rewired and checked connections for 12v switched power to IB
-Old gas flushed and new gas with seafoam
-Check resistance of negative coil wire from coil to IB. low resistance.

Problems:
-repeat test for spark and found still has weak and infrequent spark. Won't even start with starter fluid :x
-even with battery charger and direct line to coil + we get 20v while cranking. Is this normal?
-Old and new starter seem to "lock up" while cranking. What do you guys think it sounds like?

Video of starter problem (click pic). Both new and old starters did this. What do you guys think?

New starter

Coil bracket with messy wiring. It get painted and wiring will be neatened up!

Summary: Still no spark. 10volts at coil while cranking. Starter problem and no spark related?

dude this is strange. Have you tried running a new main power lead to your starter? How about manually firing your coil (manually grounding out the neg side to force a spark). Will you car start when bump starting? I have seen a car start easy when bump starting, but a wiring issue drew to much power while cranking the starter to produce a spark.

:stupid: That is (still) a weird issue. I have no real ideas for you but I can sympathize because I'm having a similar spark problem, although mine at least allows the car to run. Glad the GTI is back on the road, that car is awesome, and the 4K looks great as well! (even on a trailer!)

Also, you going to Carlisle?

I have a feeling it's gotta be wiring too, but unfortunately can't give you any ideas. Messed up for sure.

It's has to be on the power side somewhere. I think something is cause a back draw or something like this from the positive side of the coil. I know we'll figure something out its just gonna take time and lots of brain storming.

Check the supply wire to your ecu. Certain wires will drop in voltage when cranking. Just hook a multimeter up inline and watch for voltage fluctuation while cranking. This ended up being part of my no start/spark issue when I did my swap as the power to the ecm woul drop to 2v. Just a thought. Have you tried different coils?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I want to get this thing running! Makes no sense why I'm not getting spark. I know that it will get figured out with Lance, Lane, and me thinking about the problem...oh, and you MG'ers too!

This is a great idea. I'll let you know what I find out.

Definitely going to try manually grounding the coil. This will give full spark regardless of what the ecu commands so it will rule out anything in the ground circuits it doesn't change the problem. Dana, if I put 12v on the pos side of coil, this would be safe right? I'm just thinking that if I manually override both circuits, it will narrow the problem down to after the coil. Right?

I think we have some things to test now!

Thanks for chiming in guys!

to test coil, you put 12v to the positive side, and ground to the negative side, when you unground the negative side the coil should fire. So you can tap a ground wire on something grounded and watch it spark.

Not gone and not forgotten! Went back to VA this weekend to work on 4k. The Megasquirt is done. Hope to get the car moved to NC (AAA Gold member :) ). Just doing a super quick wire job to see if car runs then I'll take off all the ghetto wire nuts and do it correct. Need to get longer plug wires so that I can mount the coils remotely like my S6. If I can get the car in NC by April, I'll have it done by mid-May.
