well craig, you only saw this thread because i just updated it ;)

but heres another small one for ya!

Ok more update

In this build the decision had been made to go all AN fittings all’round. It wont be cheap but it will be rugged, seal well and should be quite worry free. So that meant I had to do away with the factory coolant tank. It was old and nasty colored and I really didn’t want to plastic weld or hack together a way to make it work, not worth it. So I started with some of the intake manifold plenum scrap and a hemisphere for that diameter. As it is plenum scrap it has been slightly cut up, perfect that allows me to use the D shaped portion and tuck the tank up under my strut tower bar right against the firewall. Its snugged up and out of the way of everything else, also high enough to be the highest point in the cooling system. I got a weld on radiator cap bung and a pressure relief cap. So I got ryan to go ahead and weld it all up. It will be pressure checked before install. There are still some alu. AN weld ons to put on but we need to mount it up and figure out the cooling line routing.

And a bit more update
Marc let me know that my Tial MVR 44’s are here, so I need to get down there and pick them up. But heres a sneak preview pic.

http://www.tialsport.com/prod_wg_mvr.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Tial MVR’s are the replacement for the v44. they are vband connections and have 4AN water cooling provisions as well! I decided to go with these,( two, one for each side of the fully divided exhaust manifold) and I thought the water cooling would be a great idea. This car is going to be driven hard and for extended sessions. I thought the water cooling was especially important in a road racing situation where the car is at a lower boost profile and will be purging lots of excess out via the WG. Where it would see a lot of heat for a long time, and keeping things cool keeps them functioning correctly.

They also come with 7 different springs!!! They are also all different diameters, not sure but it seems you are able to run them in combo. The stiffest spring is 1.5 bar. So id think you can piggyback them together and go even higher.

Excuse the crappy cell shots, when I get them ill provide better pics

Very interesting oil drain solution. I'm just using -10 on my HX52 for now, but its got a -3 (-4 line with some -3 adapters i the middle) so it should help bring the pressure down a bit. I'll change it if it smokes or something, but it hasn't so far in the few minutes I've had it running. No question, the bigger the better on the drain.

Nice, this built is awsome!
What was the reason you picked the vipec v88, and not the v44? Wondering about buying vipec for my own 24v built ;)

more of my screwed up yearly routine, working soooo much through the winter season, ive been back around for the last two months, one of still working and now one of full-time-off, and ive gotten a hell of a lot done, 3/4 of my work have been on the 16v/aba/o1e 4kq, but ive still gotten a lot done here.

RSCoupe wrote:So what happened to this project?

well im a total glutton for punishment,so as if this project wasnt enough, ive been swapping in a longitudinal 4cyl 16v head/ 2.0l 8v bottom end /o1e/2piece conversion/int. swap in my 4kq as well.

yes im doing two tranverse vw motor to o1e quattro swaps at the same time, bah of the expenses.
ive completely altered my diet to continue both of them.

moar pics less text

if this was mine i would have saved money in the vipec.. built a second harness for vems, and ran both the 4kq and this off the same vems ecu..
i had 4 cars running on one ecu at one point.. cant drive two at once, lol

Yep, its def time for some updating!!!
Its been a long winter, spring and into summer, now its time to catch this project thread up to what the car actually looks like in real life.

Haydn, made me this nice transmission tunnel with enough room to mount a factory b5 s4 shifter linkage box. The shifter box sits up nice and close to the steering wheel and allows me to run the b5 s4 selector and alignment rod, although with some extending. the removable tunnel top is also very nice, it will be awesome to be able to easily access the linkage from inside the car!
Image
Image

The linkage had to be extended about 10 ½” from its factory length. It was pretty easy and straight forward, I just elongated it in the straight tube sections. I was looking around the garage to find some material to lengthen the shifter when I came across some 97 civic ex shifter linkage, its pretty long and has some nice straight sections that I could easily use. To my shock and amazement the inner diameter of the civic linkage and outer diameter of the b5 linkage had a 0.05” tolerance!!!!! The pieces sleeved ever so snugly into each other and I reinstalled the linkage. I aligned it and tacked it in place from under the car.

And we have SHIFTING!!!! Yay

Pics!!

Ok more!

So the exhaust for the car is nearly done, now lets catch up. Im running a 4” downpipe out of the turbo and down to almost the rear of the transmission. Then a 4” to 3.5” 304SS mandrel transition, a 3.5” SS flexjoint and then the vband flange. After that vband flange is all 3.5”dia. aluminum from there back. I am running two mufflers at the back of the car. I got a lot of my exhaust components from http://www.racepartsolutions.com very nice product at a pretty good price. I especially like that mandrel tapers that they have.

Heres a quick run down on exhaust parts

Qty2, vibrant aluminum race mufflers 3.5”

Qt2 3.5” to 4” 304SS mandrel transitions

Image

racepartsolutions, s300 SS304 downpipe vband flange, fits the hx40 perfectly
http://racepartsolutions.com/proddetail ... GE&cat=102

Image

and I use all of the RPS vband kits, they are made in the usa and very nicely at that. They also have a nice centering lip so that it matches up perfectly all the time, as well as a oring groove that also holds exhaust sealer very well and seals excellently.

Image

Edit: and lastly for hangers I used Jegs red snapper grommets
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance- ... ProductId=

Image

and for on the exhaust i had some 1/8", 1 1/4" x 3 1/4" rectangle box stock. i chopped it right up into small right triangles and have drilled them and welded them to the exhaust for hangers, see pics

Now that all my materials are here, I started mocking up my exhaust. I will get it all mocked up over here and bring it to Ryan for final tig’ing. I have removed a small section of the rear/trunk floor in order to run these straight through mufflers, butted up end to end. The mufflers themselves are 3.5” inner diameter and a 5” outer diameter!! So there is only ¾” of material surround the straight through design , sweeet.

With a d11 v8 torsen rear diff in the back I had to get creative with the bends, then I decided I will relief the dif mount bracket and make a machined alu version in the future. For now this one got cut a bit and will be braced/welded for extra security.

Overall the exhaust design is very straight with minimal bends, it should flow that’s for sure.

For the over axle, in order to get the clearance I wanted, I had to hammer out another relief where the exhaust goes over the cv joint. I now have a good 5/8” to ¾” on either side, cv and chassis.

And at the rear of the car I have my nice, basic bead rolled aluminum tip hahaha, all the tubing I got had beadrolls on it already for some reason. Now honestly who runs a 2’ straight section of 3.5” aluminum for boost piping ahhahaha. So I kept it and it can be seen as my exhaust “tip” check it out

Once I get the exhaust finalized and done I will get a total weight on the post-downpipe portion, im thinking about 12-15 lbs right now mufflers and all

Image

I will be getting the exhaust tunnel portion down up to the lower portion of the downpipe.
We will be mounting the turbo in the engine bay soon.
