Aarons inline shifter in car 1-1-16

Post by speeding-g60 »

winter project (E Pluribus Unum, i might add) will be to finish and finalize the shifter i was building.

based on the old school muscle car Vertigate setup, i have been making one to fit my trans/car/needs. its close, too. but since i have all winter with free time i think i will finalize it.

especially since i now have milling machine access as well as my own mini-lathe to make stuff on. things are definitely better results with proper equipment to use.

these have been unlisted for long time.... there is 7-8 of them showing the various stages as this thing grew from an idea and a handful of parts and material to where it is now. maybe its 7-% done or so, maybe a little more. i even cannibalized a bearing from Chubs old skateboard for the linkage part on the trans rod ;)

but the goal is to not miss a shift and this should do it.

Looks solid! It'd be fun to build one like a Lenco.

You're missing 5th and 6th, er... I should say I'll need provisions for 5th & 6th gears

My old man had an inline 4 speed in his '70 429 SCJ Mach 1, I've always dreamed of having something similar in my Coupe. One day...

It that for the tube chassis car, or the red car? Very cool either way.

"new world record bitches"

So I take it this thing basically works on a ratcheting system with a series of lockouts when going from '1-2' to '3-4' correct?

sorta kinda.... the 3-4 detent pulls hard, almost negating the need for the spring to pull it down into the next slot. i studied quite a bit on this, there are some pretty neat shifters out there like this, inline stuff.

here is the whole series..... i think. including the redneck lathe to make the grooves for the clips.

but as you will see through these next vids, i tested, changed, tested, changed, and just made things gradually better and better as time went by. i got it now i think.

and that leads you to the first video..... the last in the series.

tinkering is one of my things, i like to do it. i like to see what makes things tick. this was no exception. i think i have a pretty good shot and making this thing finalized.

funny thing. a year went by and i didnt do shit with this. i got it all out a couple weeks ago to get it finished, and i lost the relay piece that connects to the trans linkage shaft. so i redesigned it, built it and tested it. just finished up today, and i found that stupid piece i lost! i searched for 2 hours looking for it, too!!!! maybe it was a sign to make new and better, dunno the Audi Gods were lookin out for me i guess.

anyhow, here is the finished product. it is as finished as i can get it until i pull the dead 01E stock gearbox out, put the freshly rebuilt 01E stock box in to dial this in. THEN i will finish assembling the dogbox and swap it out. it will not be very fun trying to dial it in on the dogbox, the dogs hardly ever line up all 4 gears at once. syncros much more better.

spending a little time on this lathe i bought and hardly ever use. i cant wait til i have a real shop with a real lathe and mill!

Fine tuning in car on stock syncro trans. Making way for the dog box to go back in.
