Other factory management options for AAN.

Post by vwnut8392 »

this idea started a few years ago when i made a 20v turbo engine run on digifant 1 from a volkswagen corrado G60. anyhow, i've been looking at doing a similar project with the AAN. so far i've been eyeballing motronic 4.4 from the 5 cylinder turbo volvo's and ME7 that runs the 07K 2.5 5 cylinder VW engine. i like the volvo motronic because the tuning for it is completely open source and it seems that it would be extremely compatible with the addition of a 60-2 crank sensor. also the VW motronic seems promising because there are tuners out there who have tuned the 2.5's stock management for turbo setup's and ME7 tuning is really open source too but once again a 60-2 trigger wheel would be needed on the crankshaft. what do you guys think about these ideas? either management can be found in any salvage yard across the country so they are readily available, they can be had far cheaper than any standalone and like i said before they both have completely open source tuning.

Throwing a 60-2 on the front is really easy. Go for it

i've been considering putting motronic 4.4 on the 20v turbo in my UR quattro actually but the coil on plug is sort of a weird to adapt to the 20v. worst case i'll just build another digifant setup for the 20vt because i know it works and works extremely well.

Keep in mind that as far as the engine management system is concerned, "coil per plug" is the same as "coil on plug"...

very true! thats a nice and neat setup too! find one of the tuna can's from an early AAN engine for the distributor and you'd have the perfect layout.

Yeah one thing I failed to mention that I found amazing when I first built the setup is the Audi wires fit *perfectly* onto the LSx coils. I was all worried about having to cut the wires up and put new ends on but they just worked as-is.

From a quick bit of reading it looks like Motronic 4.4 does not use a MAP sensor. Boost is not directly controled but is a byproduct of several other calculations for determining target power output. Is this a better method of engine management or is there some limitation to the amount of power this system can support?

Oh, and what do you need for data aquisition with these Volvo ECU's?

This page should answer all your questions about tuning motronic 4.4.

http://m44.wikia.com/wiki/M44_Wiki

for data logging they have a tunerpro plugin and an ADX definition. this is done over the OBD port with a cheap ebay vag com cable. remember M4.4 is an OBD2 management system.

These guys have developed alot of cool add on features to the ECU as well too like map switching between 4 different timing and fuel maps. The ECU is flash over OBD too so no more playing with EEPROMS and a chip burner either. it seems all you need is all the files off the wiki posted above, and a cheap ebay VAG COM cable and your good to go with tuning, data logging and reflashing the ECU. boy life is good in the volvo ECU tuning world.

The newer you get with stuff like Motronic, the more and more maps and programming there are running the show. 'Properly' adapting a system factory designed to work on another motor is very complex, as there are maps and models you can otherwise take for granted when tuning in-situ.

personally i can relate M 4.4 tuning to ME7. ME7 has no single boost map, you have to adjust a few different maps to actually raise boost levels. basically i believe if one can tune ME7 than M4.4 should be a breeze. as for creating a base map for an AAN running on it i dont see a huge problem with it, honestly i think the AAN should atleast start up with no modifications to the mapping as looking at how the volvo engine works compared to the AAN.

Here's another link with alot of good in depth info on M4.3 and M4.4.
http://www.wothrline.com/editerbara_sidor/bosch_m43_m44.htm

By the looks of things you should spend most of the time tuning the MAF mapping along with fuel and timing to adjust boost accordingly.

GM ECU from Colorado pickups? I haven't tuned any, but HPTuners software (not free) is really good on other GM applications. And I know it's available for the 5 cylinders.
