Not in my experience... I can make my wheels slip during launch much easier on my 17's than on my 18's...
There are so many factors involved there though... are your 17s really lighter than your 18s? Are tire compounds, tread patterns, conditions, widths, etc. identical? If not, then I don't think there is a comparison to be made. Even sidewall height differences can make a change there. The only real way to tell how weight change affects the hp that gets to the ground is through a calculation or measurement. Transient situations are where you'd notice the most difference though (launching is the perfect example).
I know it's not a very technical comparison. ... But all I know is that my 17's at the time had summer tires on and the 18's have those OE Pirelli P7 of off B7 S4 all seasons... That's all I got... Suspension, brakes and handling all better on 17's... Granted, my CH's combined with tires are @10lbs heavier...

I finally got the car rolling again this weekend. I would hate to have to change out the rack in pinion in this car with the motor/trans/exhaust still in the car. I'm ordering a new set of wheels and tires on Tuesday from Discount Tire and then I should be ready to ship the car to Hank.
Two weeks later, 10 cans of degreaser, busted knuckles, 20 rolls of paper towels, two scrub brushes, two cans of brake cleaner, two cans of WD40, a little powder coating, and I finally got the engine bay cleaned up. I removed the ''bomb'' , hydra boost, and ABS module. I'm really hoping for an engine bay where I can at least reach my hand in to work on something if I had to.
And I really, really, really hate oil leaks. I am hoping I can run a different power steering fluid. I hear that you can run some other fluid that is less likely to leak than mineral oil. Supposedly it is a little thicker and is less expensive. The recommended fluid by Audi is for cold weather and I will never have to worry about that.
I also finally finished cutting out the area of aluminum bumper reinforcement where I added the billet grille. This should help add some air flow to the intercooler.
me either. I'm trying to get it to you as quick as I can. I'm tired of pushing it in and out of the garage. I'd much rather be driving it. Uses more gas but way more fun!
I snapped a picture to give an idea of just how close the tire runs to the steering arm. These are factory size 15'' wheels with factory tires. Not much room for play. Discount said they know the right size wheel and tire combo to go to 17''. We will see when they come in.

I got impatient and want to get this car shipped out. I'm tired of researching wheel and tire combos and digging through forums. I ordered a set of 17''x7.5'' 5x112 with a 40mm offset. They are Platinum Apex, Black with a machine lip. There are heavier than I wanted but not as heavy as the ASA ASR1's. I got new Goodyear 225x45x17 tires and new wheel bolts. Discount Tire should have them in by Saturday. The only thing that I have to research is my hub centric rings. Discount said they would find them tomorrow, but I want to make sure they are right. They guy at the counter seemed pretty new on the job. If these don't fit right, he said they would take them back. He will mount one tire on the wheel and let me take it home to fit test it before mounting the rest.
As soon as the wheels are on, it's on a trailer to you. Sounds like I need to hurry up before the line gets too long. :-) I'm trying to get Jeff to send you the rest of my parts. Lots of polished pieces. It should look pretty good.
I don't live in Texas currently but I was raised in Clear Lake City. I imagine you know where that is since you live in Katy. Btw,that is an awesome Type 44 you are building! I will be keeping an eye on your build as it progresses for sure!
The wheels and tires came in and I guess this is where I should have done more research. So if anyone that owns a 20 valve 200 body style, they can check this out for reference. I ordered my 5x112 wheels in a 40mm on a 17'' wheel and 225x35x17 tire. IT DOESN"T WORK. If you really want to cut up the rear fender, it might work. But after bolting the wheel and tire on the rear and bouncing on the rear suspension, the rear fender was landing on top of the tire. (not by much). The fender is double walled and is about 10mm thick from outside to inside. So I have returned the two rear wheels and ordered the same wheel in a 48mm. The front wheels and tire fit perfectly with 40mm. I will have the same size wheel and tire but will have to suck the rear wheels in 8mm per side. ''Staggered'' The new ider wheels and tires still just barely clear the steering arm in the front but should not be a problem. I think these wheels match the car pretty well.

hopefully the new rear wheels come in by this weekend! I can't wait to see this thing leave my garage. I will finally have some room to weld on my rock buggy.

I finally got the wheels and tires. I have room for larger brakes now and hopefully I will need them I can keep playing with so many different things that I want to do to the car, but getting it running is more important. There is a bad ass engine and trans waiting in Las Vegas (Iroz Motorsport) and this car needs to hit the road. I can't wait to see it squatted down lower where it needs to be once the weight of the engine and transmission in. It looks pretty stupid sitting so high in the front. I still haven't done the upper portion of the grille which is why I still have the black zip ties. It can hold off until I start driving it again.

That's the plan and I have been trying to stick to it. E-85, sea level conditions, well built motor, good tuning, a little luck, and I should see 750hp. Borg Warner is saying their numbers on these turbos are very conservative and that there are many cars getting more at the wheels than what they rate them for. If not...the EFR 8374 will be the first to go.
