Curious, if you go back to one of my last attempts to help on this, I answered that you want a multi-windowed distributor.
You never specified one way or the other.

Are you running a 1 window distributor as a trigger?

I decided to post the PM here because The Architect put together a great diagnosis for weak spark for 1B users. I think we might have found my problem. I stuck a 1-window distributor in it while diagnosing why I was not getting enough spark. I'm going to get a working multi-window distributor and try that out. Fingers crossed it was a failed distributor that caused the problem in the first place. If my good distributor turns out to not solve the problem, I'll continue answering the questions below.

Thanks Architect!

TheArchitect wrote:OK I cross referenced your build thread and the previous messages you have sent me.

Let me tell you what I think you have and you can comment.

I take it that the 1B ECU has its ignition 1 driver, driving a normal inductive coil and you are connected to a 5 window distributor (the 5 window item is critical).

Can you crank the engine and read RPM with the laptop software?

You say spark is weak, how do you know this and are you sure you have spark at all?

Is the ECU configured (built) for driving a normal 2 terminal coil (some units are built for a 3/4 terminal POS coil).

If you are sure the spark is weak, have you tried bumping the dwell time?
What is you dwell time and dwell degrees?

Any possibility you timing is way off?

Reading some of your thread was confusing WRT the 034 ECU, you mention removing a MAF line and the effecting the ECU running, whats this about?

Is there another "stock" ECU connected and partially in control of the engine?

I'm back home for a couple days. Been working on the GTi a bunch because it is my dd'er and needs attention. I pulled (err..pushed) the Audi into the garage. I'm going to test the Hall sender the way my Bentley manual says. Is this ok? I am using 034 IC for fuel and spark. Here is how I'd do it:

-Remove Hall sender connector, put voltmeter + on terminal 4 and - on terminal 12. Verify I have power with ignition on. I should see 5v right?
-If yes, do next step
-Plug Hall sender in, slide up boot, put negative probe into middle terminal and positive probe to + battery. Crank engine and watch for fluctuating voltage.

FYI here are my hall sender pin outs. They are wired per the 034 diagram. pin 4=5v. pin 11=hall trigger. pin 12= neg shielded.

If I do these tests, this will show if I have a bad hall sender right?

The radiator in our 4k isn't angled it is mounted as factory and clears the oil pan no problem

Home on Thanksgiving break. I coasted the 4000 in the garage.

-still no start. At best it stumbles.
-still weak (orange spark) with spark plug to ground
-orange/blue spark from coil to ground while cranking
-coil is getting 20v WHILE cranking
-All chassis and engine grounds checked over and sanded.
-Put new negative battery ground on
-same cap and rotor that the engine fired up with in May
-only 2 wires on my coil; ground trigger and positive 12v.

Why am I getting orange spark? Orange is too weak to start the car, correct? Anyone have any suggestions? I am having communication problems with my 034 IB controller which is my fault I believe. The tach signal touched the negative side of the coil and since then, communication has not very intermittent. Going to send the controller off soon to be inspected!

When I couldn't get my car to start due to ignition issues it I solved it by going to new coils, wires, and plugs.
Not sure how much that'll help. But are you sure your coil is good?

Lane: Yeah, the car is in VA with me. The car is timed correctly. Spoke with your Dad about it. Thanks!

Pilihp2 I am sure my coil is good. I just took it off my GTi that runs well and put it on the Audi. I have not changed my plugs. My ignition wires ohm out ok. I'll check them again.

Going to install new plugs/ohm plug wires and report back. I doubt it is those but I'll test anything at this point!!

This MAY have already been discussed, but are you 100% your getting fuel? If your getting spark and timing are correct, that pretty much leaves some kind of fuel issue. Just my 2 cents.

Almost sold it today. I can't figure out why the f*ck I'm not getting good spark.

Yep, I'm getting fuel. The problem is spark. It weak and infrequent.

Is your coil good? Try swapping it with another? Are you getting a full 12-14v @ the coil?

Coil is good and I'm getting 20v while cranking at the coil. I can take the dizzy out of the engine, turn it by hand and hear sparking at all 5 contact points of the rotor. But when it cranks, it doesn't fire frequently enough or bright enough.

Try a hotter plug? Also, check timing? Honestly, if your getting some spark and fuel you should be able to get it to fire over at least.
