Every time I see a Cayman, I think about that Porsche/Audi/VW heritage, hell it doesn't even need to be a Cayman, but I always give the driver that look...... :o Very nice work on the decals & emblems I will be purchasing some very soon... !

Well I guess that was pretty random of me.

I traded the Cayman S in when I got the Q5 just shy of 2 years ago now. The car sold to a friend of my salesman/friend at Audi Henderson. I had been getting updates along the way that the car was well cared for and whatnot and the guy had been really happy with it. One day I was on their website and saw my Cayman listed for sale again. I was going to stop by and visit it, with the fantasy of maybe getting it back. I didn't make it in to the dealer since I had a business trip that kept me away for the better part of a week.

That week passed and I noticed the car was no longer on the website. No biggie - wasn't meant to be. Plus I know it wouldn't have lasted long regardless. I stopped by the dealership that following Saturday after Cars n Coffee, my buddy and the GM weren't around so I started chattin with one of the other salesman that I know. Somehow we got on the subject of used cars and I blurted out "so what happened to my Cayman" ? I saw it listed and then it disappeared.... He got a look on his face like I was from another planet and stuttered a bit. Your Cayman? The white one? Yea. "I totalled it"

A Customer from out of state INSISTED on getting an independent inspection and the salesman was in a collision on the way there. Nobody hurt, but $23k worth of damage = totalled.

For the enthusiastic you may have noticed the date on the wrecked photos: 4-13-12 Yup, imagine MY Friday the 13th Horror...

I followed the car thru CoPart auction and my local dealer/shop went and inspected it. He wanted to buy it, said it was actually an easy fix... It just wasnt something I could have gotten myself wrapped up in. Farewell my friend.

Note to self: After tuning for E85, if you leave the LM-1 turned on for 2 weeks, your battery will be so dead that it won't take a charge.

Pikes Peak Checklist:
New Battery
Build and install torsen rear diff (or steal from the Red Pill)
Build proper downpipe-back exhaust
Install '91 200 Torsen 016
Come up with iPod-only stereo

The Transmission would be an icing-on-the-cake project only if I have time.

Aaahh, I don't feel bad!! I distinctly remember offering up an original 3:89 rearend and good 016 tranny for the car. :o I got the impression that having gears to actually make a long trip had Sean worried.....he turned it down.

It's really the full-Torsen arrangement Im shooting for over the gearing. I don't want any more switches or vacuum this-and-that's. This thing wont be 20v forever (much longer) anyway ;o} Maybe sometime between Pikes Peak and Battleborn I may have to double my number of valves.

Do I remember seeing somewhere that I need a different pilot bearing for the Torsen 016 vs the existing 016?

So it appears I can't get all my bits and pieces from one single parts house. Don't ya love it when you gotta spend half the value of the parts in shipping since it's all gotta come from 4 directions?

Im trying to procure all the seals for the 90 Coupe rear end as well as the 200 20v pilot bearing.

I went over to the shop with the replacement battery tonight, got that hooked up and I had plenty of power - just no fuel pump...

I hot wired the pump to get the car home to the garage where I'll work on it. Hopefully it's just a failed relay and not some driver from within the IIc. Sometimes I amaze myself in a McGuyver sorta way. The only way I could hot wire the pump without tearing up the wiring was to use an x-acto blade to join the two female connectors.

I know that your car has been upgraded to EFI, but I always carry several sets of jumper leads and a toggle switch with me in all my Audis. It's nice to be able to disconnect the positive lead from the fuel pump and jumper straight from the battery. It eliminates a lot of guess work as to why the fuel pump isn't running until you get home, and also allows you to shut the pump off if you have the flooding problem that is common on the CIS cars that have sat for years. The jumper leads have saved my ass at least twice and I won't drive an old Audi without them. Jumper cables will work in a pinch.

Remember this is the guy that headed to Colorado and the only tools I loaded in the car was some Quick Detail, soft towels, and my AAA card lol

Even though it's been reliable, Im 4+ years into this EFI swap so it's probably time I start packing some tools and gadgets.

Well that is somewhat true, except you had the peace of mind to know that Hank's Urq driven by me was coming up behind you with half the garage in the trunk! LOL Heck we could have rebuilt the car on the side of the road with what I felt I had to have to get Hank's car up to Colorado. Remember, while pulling out of the garage, the fitting on the fuel rail broke and I left a river of gas all the way down my driveway and missed a prime opportunity to burn the car and house down in one fell swoop. After the repair, I think that even more tools were added to the trunk including jumpers and a meter. :D

LOL, I just heard a story about you picking up the Delta from a friend of mine who knows the previous owner. I guess he was surprised you were driving it home.

It left Francois' son stranded on his way to prom lol At least I know what didn't happen in the car that night...

I specifically chose that Integrale over the other one that was available since Francois WAS the prior owner.

Once the frayed wire to the voltage regulator was replaced it's not missed a beat since and been charging like a champ.

So, I changed the title of my thread: You might be an Iroz if...

You take a completely good running 20v UrQ and start a 20v swap 3 weeks before a national event lol

Image

Well actually...

That smug little list I mentioned a couple days ago got the best of me. I got the car up in the air tonight and started the process of removing the rear diff. After I got the axles loose I focused on the rear mount. I got my deep socket and my offset wrench into place and heard a rattle. A rattle? HUH? Yea, my clunking rear end was due to the bolt for the rear mount loosening up. Tightened the heck out of it and bolted the axles back up. I prematurely gloated to Hank via text message.

I decided to head to the front of the car and fix that exhaust leak that was progressing as we tuned for E85. Usually an easy fix, the front two nuts and the rear nut are generally the culprits. Not this time. I tightened up the front two and in the process of checking the rest I saw that I was also missing an intake manifold bolt. I think Hank forgot how hard it was to work on a 20v in a small chassis car 'cuz he basically proceeded to call me a p*ssy - in so many words... Much to my dismay, the rear exhaust nut which usually needs tightening - was gone - stud and all. I stuck a zip tie in the hole and verified the stud had not broken. Super, I have brand new spare studs and nuts! But noooooooo, can't be that easy right? Nope. That rear hole is slightly misaligned with the header...

I accepted the fact this was not going to get better until it got worse, so sh*t started flying off the car and before you know it the intake is out and I have access to the header. I REALLLLLY don't want the mess of pulling the turbo and Im just stubborn enough to find a way to get that stud installed with just loosening the rest of the nuts.

In the meantime I sent Hank the above pic via text message - reclaiming my manhood.

He replied with: "order the dang injectors" or something to that affect. Then we can really throw the E85 at it...

I'm not sure if upping the boost past the 24psi it was tuned at is going to be my goal - obviously the increased boost liked to force things to remove themselves from my engine.

I promise, and mark my words - this will be the absolute LAST time I dig into this car as a 20v. It's sad but I just don't enjoy working on the 20v anymore and it probably forces me to neglect certain aspects - like checking the exhaust leak sooner, of just general poking around to make sure things are ok.

On a lighter note, Hanks header is holding up like a trooper after four more years on my UrQ. Man, four years since the swap? And UrQ 25 ? Dang...

Get some 850cc/min injectors minimum!!! Shoot, get 1000cc if you think 20v is that close in your future.
